Is Cyberpunk Finally Getting Multiplayer?

As someone who really enjoys playing Cyberpunk 2077 – in case it wasn’t obvious by all the articles I’ve written on the subject – I’ve been eagerly looking forward to what CD Projekt Red has in store for the sequel. After all the bumps the first game faced at launch, the updates and improvements have turned it into something really special, and now the sequel (Project Orion) has the potential to take everything to the next level with the possibility of multiplayer.

Yes, it seems that Cyberpunk 2077’s follow-up might finally deliver what fans have been hoping for. A recent job listing from CD Projekt Red for a “Senior Combat Designer” has sparked speculation. While the listing focuses on combat design, the “Nice to Have” qualifications mention experience with multiplayer games.

What Could Multiplayer Look Like in Project Orion?

Listen, I’ve spent countless hours playing Cyberpunk 2077. The thought of having that experience with friends is honestly really exciting!

Imagine teaming up with your buddies, taking on missions together, and exploring the city as a group. Maybe there’s a co-op mode where you and your crew pull off heists, hack into systems, or infiltrate corporate buildings, each player bringing their own cybernetic enhancements to the table.

Or I could see Project Orion leaning into something more competitive. Picture this: a multiplayer mode set in Night City where you face off in a battle royale-style fight to the finish. Everyone drops into the city, scrambling for weapons, hacking opportunities, and alliances, all while trying to outsmart each other.

With Cyberpunk’s deep lore, you could even have gangs or corpos competing against each other, with different abilities and styles that would change the dynamics of every match. It’d be the perfect mix of GTA chaos and Cyberpunk’s gritty world.

A Separate Multiplayer Experience, Please

But here’s the thing – and I feel really strongly about this – they need to keep the multiplayer completely separate from the single-player story. The story-driven focus of Cyberpunk 2077 is what really drew me into the game, and I’d hate to see that watered down by a shift toward multiplayer mechanics that could mess with the pacing and immersion of the world.

In my ideal world, Cyberpunk’s single-player and multiplayer experiences would live side by side, with both offering their own unique rewards. The multiplayer could be its own thing, with custom missions, competitive modes, or random events, while the single-player story remains untouched, rich in detail and character depth. That way, everyone gets what they want: those who want to experience the story solo can do so uninterrupted, while those who crave multiplayer action get an entirely separate experience to dive into.

Ultimately, the idea of multiplayer in Project Orion is still just that – an idea. The job listing doesn’t guarantee that it will happen, but it certainly points in that direction. If CD Projekt Red can figure out a way to integrate multiplayer without losing what makes Cyberpunk special, I think it could be an incredible addition to the game.
